What is the attitude of the cartoonist towards the
Suffragettes and the Suffragists? (8 marks)
The caption of the cartoon is "The Shrieking
Sister", this indicates to me that the cartoonist
thinks the Suffragette is unstable and volatile. This
can be backed up by the fact that he has drawn her
in a very threatening pose, I also know this is the
Suffragette because of the banner she is holding.
The cartoonist also adds a subcaption mentioning
"the sensible woman" I know this is the Suffragist
because she is portrayed as sensible and stern
towards the Sufragette. He also indicates that she
thinks the Suffragette is not helping women get the
vote. From my own knowledge I know that the
Suffragettes and the Suffragists strongly disagreed
with each other on the methods they should use to
gain women's suffrage. The cartoonist is clearly
showing a supportive attitude towards the
Suffragists cause. I also know that the Suffragists
were willing to work alongside the Liberal
government and the Suffragettes refused. Both
women are pictured outside a Liberal meeting and
