Mitosis

Notes and simple pictures showing the main stages of Mitosis:

  • Interphase
  • Prophase
  • Metaphase
  • Anaphase
  • Telophase
  • Cytokinesis

I remember the stages using this mnemonic, which is so silly that it just sticks in my head... Innocent PowerMen Are Too Cool :)

Does anyone know any others?

First 128 words of the document:

THE CELL CYCLE Mitosis
CELL CYCLE DIAGRAM
INTERPHASE
G1 phase:
o Growth
o New organelles made
o Protein synthesis
S phase:
o DNA synthesis & replication
G2 phase
o Growth
o More protein synthesis
o Further organelles made
PROPHASE
Chromosomes shorten and thicken
Centrioles move to opposite ends of the
cell forming a spindle across the cell
between both poles
Nuclear envelope breaks down
METAPHASE
Chromosomes' centromeres attach to
spindle fibres at the equator
ANAPHASE
Spindle fibres contract pulling each
chromosomes apart
So 1 chromatid of each chromosomes is
pulled to each pole of the spindle
The spindle breaks down

Here's a taster:

TELOPHASE
Chromosomes unravel
Nuclear envelope reforms around 2
groups of chromosomes
CYTOKINESIS
Cytoplasm divides
Chromosomes uncoil, becoming distinct
again
2 identical daughter cells are
produced…read more
