CRIME
MEDNICK ADOPTION STUDY and PROPERTY THEFT
AIM to investigate whether criminality is to do with our biological make up
DESIGN Independent measures design
Natural experiment
IV whether the children's biological after is a convicted property theft criminal
DV whether the children committed property theft
PROCEDURE
14, 427 adopted children
Studied how many of the adopted children had criminal records compared to their biological
father
RESULTS
Children whose biological father committed theft were more likely to do so as well
CONCLUSION
Study suggest criminal behaviour is inherited because the children were not raised by their
biological father but yet they inherited their criminality
EVALUATION
Strength Weakness
Large sample so results are reliable and not just Only investigated property theft so not
a fluke generalisable to all crimes
Only looked at adopted children so cannot say
all children's criminal behaviour is genetic
because family changes can affect criminality as
well
Only looked at father but we inherit genes from
mother and father
