Mass movement causes
Rock strength- more resistant or less resistant e.g. granite or
Rock porosity- percentage of pore space in rocks. More porous
rocks hold more water making them heavier and more likely to move.
Rock structure- folding/faulting rocks have weaker areas making
them more likely to move.
Slop angle- higher angles have higher influence of gravity increasing
chances of movement.
Precipitation regime- amount/intensity of rainfall overtime,
saturated ground is heavier leading to collapse
Groundwater level- higher levels lubricate soil increasing chance of
Weathering- chemical/physical/biological
Temperature- higher temperature range leads to weathering types
such as freeze thaw.
Vegetation coverage- vegetation binds soil together and intercepts
rainfall, low vegetation leads to mass movement due to a lack of
strength in the soil and more wetness.
Human activity
Mining/tourism/farming all contribute to mass movement. Mining
leads to mass movement due to controlled explosions and tunnelling.
Tourism leads to mass movement due to erosion of footpaths. Farming
leads to mass movement due to run off from fields increasing erosion
and weathering.
