MARKETSIATION AND PARENTOCRACY
MAKERISATION Marketisation Is introducing competition in state run intuitions
AND 1988Margret Thatcher introduced marketisation and this was
PARENTOCRACY continued by new labour in order to promote freedom and choice
This means schools musty compete for "customers" or students
,looking more appetising with success within league tables
DAVID
Describes parentocracy which refers to the "rule of parents" and
their choice and freedom to choose the correct school to meet the
needs of their children
There are many steps government has taken to promote
marketisation in the education system
PUBLICATIONS OF THE EXAM TABLE AND OFSTEAD
REPORTS
OPEN ENROLMENT ALLOWING SCHOOLS TO RECRUIT
MORE PUPILS
FORMULA FUNDING WICH INCLUDES RECEIVING EQUAL
FUNDING FOR EACH STUDENT DESPITE INTELLIGENCE OR
STATUS
REPODUCTION OF It is argues that the best school places go to middle class parents with
INEQUALITY cultural capital ( knowledge of the system) THERFORE reproducing
inequalities as the working class are yet again at a disadvantage
BALL AND WHITTY
Argues that these inequalities are reproduced with the helps of EXAM
LEAGUE TABLES and the FUNDING FORMULA
THE FUNDING Schools get funding according to the number of pupils they can
FORMULA attract
Hence , more popular schools (with good exam results) get more
funding and can afford better facilities and a better teaching level
Due to the system and middle class parents knowledge and capital the
more popular schools recruit middle class pupils and thrive
On the flip side less popular schools are left to the working class and
through a lack of resources once again fail as a vicious circle
EXAM TABLES By publishing exam reports parents can see the "best" schools which
makes them sustain or increase popularity
Due to middle class parents ability and advantages they have the
ability to get their children in to these schools were as working class
cant and go to schools at the bottom of the leagues tables
ONCE AGAIN PRODUCING CLASS INEQUALITIES
MYTH OF BALL AND GERWIRTZ
PARENTOCRACY Believe that parentocracy is a myth
It is a disguise that parents get more freedom and choice as
this is only applicable to the middle classes due to there
economic and cultural capital
Realistically working class parents get no choice or freedom as
they are stuck with less successful schools and this produces
inequalities
