Managing natural resources- Denmark's energy policy
Managing supply: 20% of Denmark's energy already comes from renewable energy
and the goal is to reach 100% by 2050. Wind power supplies 25% of electricity
and the goal is to reach 50% by 2050.
Physical factors
Temperate maritime climate at the low pressure belt meaning it is a windy
country and so has learnt to capture wind energy
Large and low lying coastline and shallow seas allows for offshore wind
1st country to use offshore and onshore wind power the industry developed
through experience
Danes are positive about wind power and most welcome more wind energy in
the electricity system. Therefore it's easier to build wind farms as there is
less opposition from the public.
Clear strategy- 2050 is a declaration of energy independence from coal, oil
and gas by 2050. A clear strategy means plans can be put in place to make
it happen.
By 2020 half the Danish electricity will be provided by wind power alone.
Another 20% will come from biomass
Co-operation with Sweden and Germany- the Kriggers Flak area in the
Baltic sea has been chosen as the world's first offshore electricity grid.
This will double Denmark's wind power energy capacity to 42% while
providing domestic electricity for 50,000 homes in 3 countries.
Not expensive for customers- expansion of renewable energy is funded by
feed in tariffs paid by customers of electricity
Managing demand currently 40% of energy is wasted so efficient energy is needed
in industry, business, agriculture and in homes. The demand will continue to grow.
