50s involved unemployment & inflation kept rising= pressure for Macmillan to change things
He and the chancellor, Lloyd agreed a public sector pay freeze and tax rises=UNPOPULAR
'62 the national economic council was set up compromising a cabinet members and union
members and employers to sort out economic difficulties BUT failed
Gov fell behind in polls due to Lloyd's 62 budget including a tax on sweets= BAD
Mac had to drastically change his cabinet by sacking a third of his cabinet including Lloyd!!
Although it may have been a sensible move , the manner he did it made it seem panic
induced and a political disaster
New team more young and energetic and more talented
New Chancellor, Maudling produced a budget designed to kick start the economy once again
Other factors led to the downfall of the Conservatives
