Lord of the Flies ­ Beelzebub ­ Hebrew for devil.
Chapter key points
Chapter 1- The boys land on the island, we meet Ralph and Piggy, Piggy finds a conch and Ralph
blows it to call the other boys. We then meet the littluns and Jacks choir, the boys vote for Ralph to
be leader. Jack, Ralph and Simon go to explore the island; Jack vows to kill a pig after he fails the first
Chapter 2- Ralph decided who hold the conch can speak and meetings will be held. The mulberry boy
says he saw a `beastie', Ralph says they need a signal fire but they set half the island on fire, the
mulberry boy then is noticed to be missing.
Chapter 3- Ralph is trying to build huts but says no one is helping him, Jack just wants to hunt. Ralph is
worried that the younger boys cannot sleep because of the nightmares (beastie). Jack says that the
boys need meat and he argues with Ralph. Simon helps the littluns reach fruit and sits in the forest
Chapter 4- Roger throws stones at a littun, Jack creates his mask and the hunters kill a pig. The fire
goes out when there is a ship and Jack hits Piggy.
Chapter 5- Ralph calls a meeting and says about how they aren't sticking to the rules, eg. Fire and
water. The littluns are still worried about the beastie but Ralph says it's not real, they say it may have
come from the sea and Jack says that his hunters will kill it if it's real. The choir go, Ralph doubts his
leadership and when they sleep, they can hear a littun crying.
Chapter 6- There is a battle in the sky above, but no one sees as the twins Sam and Eric fall asleep. A
parachutist falls and land on the island, the twins see him in the morning and run to Ralph saying it's
the beast. They all set out to look for the beast.
Chapter 7 - Simon tells Ralph that he will get home okay, they hunt down but do not kill a pig, they
play a game acting out killing a pig. Jack, Ralph and Roger climb the mountain and see the beast'
Chapter 8 ­ Ralph blows the conch to call a meeting, Jack says they should vote him as leader but they
don't. Jack leaves and creates a new tribe; Ralph and Piggy try to build a fire on the beach. The
hunters kill a sow and put its head on a stick for the beast, Simon has a fit, and the head (Lord of the
Flies) talks to him.
Chapter 9 ­ Simon sees that the parachutist is not a beast; the others are having a feast, dancing and
acting the killing of the sow, as Simon comes over they think he's the beast and kill him. His body is
washed into the sea in a storm.
Chapter 10 ­ While the others are at castle rock, Piggy and Ralph don't want to talk about killing
Simon. Jack hurts the boys and is a nasty leader, in the night they steal Piggy's glasses.
Chapter 11- Ralph and Piggy go to castle rock to gain back the glasses but Jack and Ralph fight and
then Roger pushes a rock which kills Piggy. Ralph is chased off of castle rock.

and constantly complains about his asthma. He is also myopic and almost blind without his glasses. But
Piggy is also rational and has an understanding about life. He constantly warns the boys about their
behaviour and foolish ways. He also becomes Ralph's best friend and serves as a sounding board and
