Churchill's personal popularity did not carry into peace time
Tories still blamed for great depression & failure to prepare Britain
for war
Wanted new start for Britain with a `land fit for heroes' and Tories
were too old fashioned for this
Poor Tory electioneering campaign which they only spent £3000 on
Key labour figures had been prominent during the war time coalition
Electoral system worked in labour's favour = they gained a seat for
every 30 522 votes cast
Soldiers returning from war looking to return to old jobs & secure
War had shown that old ways had to go due to its collective nature
Old problems of poverty & slum housing would no longer be tolerated
Britain needed to adapt to new technologies since much of the British
industry had been ruined/ exhausted
