Internal Migration Case Study Urbanisation in China
In 1990, around 26% of people in China's population lived in urban areas.
By 2006, this figure had increased to 44% (over 550 million people).
This was caused by push and pull factors:
Push:
Fewer jobs Mechanisation in rural areas has resulted in high levels of
unemployment in urban areas.
Lower wages and higher poverty Wages are lower in rural areas leading to
higher levels of poverty. E.g. in 2004, there was 26.1 million people in rural
areas in poverty
Shortage of services Services like education and healthcare are funded by
taxes collected locally. This means poor rural areas don't have the money to
improve their services
Pull:
More Jobs Many Industries in urban areas
Higher wages and lower poverty Average income is three times higher
Better Services such as education and healthcare Lack of funding in rural
areas meant that in 2002, 1.1 million children could couldn't go to primary
school.
Impacts of Urbanisation on Urban areas:
Positive More workers and an increase in demand for services ease trade
and industry. This is good for the economy.
Negative The increasing population causes more pollution and demand for
services. Over 270 Cities have no water treatment plants so water is dumped
straight into rivers.
