Since the questions always have the same sort-of structure in the sources exam for history, this document will show you the general idea of each question broken down step-by-step. Hope this is helpful :)

How to structure question 1: Making an inference from a source.
This question is worth 6 marks.
The structuring of this question is very simple. You get 3 marks for making 3 points and you get the
other 3 marks by backing your points up with quotes.
For example: From source ......., we can learn that ........................ . You can tell this because the
source says ........... . Another thing we can tell from the source is that ................................ .
The information from the source that tells us this is the words: ......................................... .
Finally, we can learn from the source that ............................... and this is mentioned when the
source says ................................. .
How to structure question 2: The purpose question.
You can gain up to 8 marks for answering this question.
NB: You don't just gain your marks by saying what the purpose is, your own knowledge needs to be
mentioned too to contextualise the purpose of the source. This is the mark scheme for Ques. 2...
1. 2 marks for summarising the source
2. 2 marks for saying the message of the source (what impressions are you, the viewer, left
with?
3. 2 marks for writing what the purpose is (why was this source written, published, etc...)
4. And the final 2 marks are for you to add in your own knowledge to contextualise the source.
For example: Source ........ shows ............. . The message of the source is ................... . The
purpose of the source is ...................... And from my own knowledge, I can say that
............................... .
How to structure question 3: How far do 3 sources agree with each other?
This question is worth 10 marks and it can be easy to miss out on that one extra mark...
In this question, you need to be able to explain how the source does and does not support the view
as well as explaining how the sources are supporting each other and/or do not support each other.
To reach L3 (ie. Top marks), you need to make a judgement about how far the source supports the
view eg. A little, a lot, etc... To get the top marks, you also need to be able to say how reliable or
typical the sources are and in order to do this you need to think about Nature, origin and purpose.
