Family Diversity
INCREASE IN SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES
Single parent households has almost tripled
2% in 1961
7% in 1998
REASONS FOR THE INCREASE IN SPF's
More socially acceptable to cohabit, live as a single or gay parent
Secularisation
Legislation such as the 1969 Divorce Reform Act
RAPOPRTS
Family Diversity is not just about different family types (i.e. SPF's). It is also about the
following:
Orgsanisation: Are conjugal roles segregated or joint?
Culture/religion: Differences in attitudes and lifestyles that religion may
influence
Class: Working Class may not input as much education to their children
compared to middle class
Life cycle: Dependent of the age and quantity of family
Cohort: Offspring who stay with their parents well into adult life
REGIONAL DIVERSITY
EVERSLEY AND BOONERJEA
People who live together move away and leave friends and family behind
Single parenting is high in innercity areas: Classic working class extended
family still exist in many towns and cities in the UK
GAY & LESBIAN FAMILIES
Families are chosen and so too are the friendship networks that are connected
These families are made possible due to IVF and surrogacy
Civil Partnership Act 2005 has also enabled samesex couples to experience
similar legal right as heterosexual couples

BALLARD
Children in these families have an experience of 2 cultures
Not all children reject the principle of arranged marriage
Most families kept links with their origin village in Asia
UK WEST INDIAN FAMILIES
Barrow found that West Indian families were mother centred.
Berthoud and Beishon found that West Indians placed a low emphasis on
