Search For My Tongue
THE POET Sujata Bhatt Indian. Bhatt was born in the city Ahmedabad,
within the Gujarat region of India. Her mother tongue is `Gujarati'. When
she was 12 years old Sujata and her family moved to America, where
she studied English.
She has not returned to living in India and currently resides in Germany
with her family. Sujata writes her poems in English, but also translates
other Gujarati work into English.
THE POET'S INSPARATION In an interview Bhatt claimed she wrote
`Search For My Tongue' whilst she was studying English at an American
university, at the time she was afraid she might lose her native language.
Her mother tongue represents an emotional link to her family, childhood
and time in India, which she describes "the deepest layer of my
