Imitiaz Dharker
THE POET Imitiaz Dharker ScottishMuslim. Dharker was born in the
city of Lahore, Pakistan. However, before her ninth birthday, her family
moved to Glasgow, Scotland. Dharker is noted as one of the most
inspirational poets of the contemporary age. Not only is she a poet,
Imitaz is an artist, many of her collective works are selfillustrated, she
also scripts and directs documentaries.
THE POET'S INSPARATION During an interview Dharker claimed that,
"For me, personally, the poem 'This Room' is about making the
definitions of nationality, religion, place, place of birth, geography, slip
away -- crash up through clouds. For someone else, it might be about
something different. But for me it was about a moment of immense
possibility, the improbable having the scope to arrive."
OTHER CONTEXTUAL DETAILS During her higher education, in Glasgow,
Dharker studied Literature and Philosophy, she describes herself as a
`naturally inquisitive woman, not afraid to explore where others would
