Slim (in depth)
Slim is the jerkline skinner (lead mule-team driver) at the ranch. He is excellent at his job. He is the
natural leader at the ranch. Everyone respects his views and looks up to him. He has a quiet dignity:
he doesn't need to assert himself to have authority. "There was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so
profound that all talked stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken
on any subject, be it politics or love. "He understands the relationship between George and Lennie.
He helps George at the end and reassures George that he did the right thing. We know little else
about him, which gives him a slightly mysterious quality
Possible Essay Questions and their plans
(If you've read my past packs, you'll know this entire paragraph) For any question I would always
advise to do THREE amazing paragraphs, than four average ones. But don't make the mistake of
verbally spewing all over your work! Most people will be amazingly confident at one paragraph
knowing hundreds of quotes, but spending so much time on one paragraph, you forget about the
others. So, for probably the hundredth time... TIME MANAGEMENT!
1) In what ways does Slim act as the "prince" of the ranch?
Okay, not the nicest question alive... which is why I choose it! You really need to know the novel
inside-out to be able to write for 40 minutes on something so specific. But really, if you look at the
question, what it's actually asking you is to show evidence that Slim is a lovely, kind man which is
pretty simple! As always (although in this question it is not necessary) I would either write a
sentence or two in the conclusion, or if you can, do a paragraph on why Slim doesn't act like the
prince of the ranch! So this is what I would do:
Paragraph one Slim is calm, and respected as authority on the ranch
"Slim came in, followed by Curley, Carlson and Whit"
Entering in hierarchy, as the natural authority, Slim goes first
"There was a gravity in his manner" He does not need
violence, he has an aura of authority.
"Slim stood up slowly and with dignity" He is calm, and
doesn't need to prove his power, he is almost blessed with it
