ELECTROLYSIS REVISION
ELECTROLYSIS= the decomposition of a substance using electricity.
ELECTROLYTE= this is a compound that will ONLY conduct electricity when molten or when dissolved in
water. These compounds DO NOT conduct electricity when SOLID
ELECTRODES= carbon or metal rods that dip into the electrolyte to connect the circuit with a power
supply. There are always 2 electrodes.
ANODE= the POSITIVE electrode
CATHODE= the NEGATIVE electrode... C for Cranky Cath
ANION (negative) = the ion that moves towards the POSITIVE ELECTRODE... Negative attracts
Positive. Here the ion loses electrons OIL.
CATION (positive) = the ion that moves towards the NEGATIVE ELECTRODE...Positive attracts
Negative. Here the ion gains electrons RIG.

Electrolysis only works with molten or dissolved ionic compounds because the IONS are free to
move.

PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF ELECTROLYSIS
At the negative electrode...
The negative electrode attracts positive ions-which gain electrons. This is
called REDUCTION (R.I.G) so we say ions have been reduced.
Because metal and hydrogen ions are positively charged, so whether
you get the metal or the hydrogen during electrolysis depends on the
position of the metal in the reactivity series ( people say lions can munch
