BEFORE 1870s- some of the working
class were educated by churches and
charities etc
· 1870- Forster's Education Act. It was
highly recommended to attend school. It
started with a basic education for up to 10
years including the working class. It wasn't
compulsory and it was a free state school .
Meanwhile, private/ public schools for
upper and middle classes were fee-

Here's a taster:

1944+- Tripartite system. A system of 3 schools that
were attended by all depending on the results of your
11+. Free secondary school education till 15 years but
was increased to 16 years in 1973. The 11+ was a test
of natural intelligence.
· If you passed the 11+ you would go to a grammar school
for the academic
· If you failed your 11+ you could go to a secondary
practical school for the more practical students.
· If you failed your 11+ and were lucky, you could go to a
technical school but this was very dangerous for young
children
· This system was never intended to create class
inequality but it did.
· They made the 11+ easier for boys as girls started to
excel boys in their results due to society still being

1960's- The tripartite system was unfair as
it was realised that it was too young for
students to be labelled after just 1 exam.
They then created comprehensive
education where one school was created
for all with easy accessibility. This failed as
there were still grammar schools and
private/ public schools. Comprehensive
schools were supposed to be
economically fair as they were supposed
to have equal resources that were
combined with other schools but due to
social classes having unequal knowledge

Here's a taster:

Education Reform Act 1988- Created the
national curriculum for all ages 4-16 years, it
gave parents choice on where to send their
child. Schools were starting to be treated like a
business and schools were told to market
themselves. Formula funding was also created=
each child was worth £££. This didn't work as
only middle class parents understood the system
due to cultural and economical capital. Only the
good schools (usually with m.class) would
receive funding due to popularity so the failing
schools couldn't improve.…read more

1997- New Labour in power= Blair and Brown
· There aims were to reduce inequality within education, promote
greater diversity, more choice and competition. This would then
make GB more competitive in global economy.
· The created compensatory education to give children what they
were lacking at home, this didn't work as most of the child's time
was spent at home. EMA was created, tis improved attendance not
results. Action zones were created to help the poorer families.
Labour tried to get more children into education by focussing on
families who were going to uni for the first time. The leaving age of
compulsory education was proposed to increase to 18. Tried to stop
NEETS= not in education, employment or training. Literacy and
numeracy hours and smaller classes to improve ability= NR
initiative. They used some socialist and some new right views in
their policies.
· These failed as no matter what happens you can't please everyone.
Uni fees are too expensive. Still class inequality. WISE and
abolishing the gender bias 11+ reduces gender inequality and there
is no more emphasis on multicultural and multi religious education.…read more
