Weather: The current conditions of the atmosphere on a local scale.
Climate: The average long-term weather conditions for an area.
The world distribution of climates is influenced by solar radiation, the distribution of land &
sea, ocean currents, prevailing winds, altitude, temperature and precipitation.
Cool Western Maritime Climate (CWTM)
CHARACTERISTIC COOL TEMPERATE WESTERN
MARITIME
TEMPERATURE Warmer in summer, cooler in winter;
smaller range. Kept warm due to the
North Atlantic Drift (NAD) from the Gulf
of Mexico.
PRECIPITATION Occurs all year round. Comes as frontal
rain from depressions, increased by
relief.
WINDS Westerly prevailing
PRESSURE Higher in summer, lower in winter, but
SYSTEMS can vary greatly.
AIR MASSES Mostly tropical maritime and polar
maritime; meet at polar front. Also
