Global supply and consumption of one resource e.g. oil
Peak Oil: when oil production reaches its maximum and begins to decline
Consumption is currently increasing:
1965 = 32m barrels per day
2005 = 85m barrels per day
Prediction 2030: 116m but it's believed impossible to produce more than 100m barrels per day.
Exploitation of Resources (e.g. the rainforest)

Why are resources running out?
Increase in technology enabling natural resources to be extracted quickly and efficiently.
Increased demand due to developments in technology: air travel etc.
A rapidly increasing population. This leads to greater demand for natural resources.
Cultures of consumerism. Materialistic views lead to the mining of gold and diamonds for use
in jewellery--something unnecessary for human life or advancement.
Excessive demand often leads to conflicts due to intense competition.
Malthus' Theory 1798
Population growth = exponential, Food supply =
arithmetic
Population growth will outstrip supply which will result in
famine and probably conflict. This will result in many deaths
and result in the decline of the population so that food
supply meets the demand of the population.
Boserup's Theory 1965
Population growth = exponential Food supply = increases rapidly then levels off to meet the
demand of the population because new technology is constantly being developed: ploughs,
greenhouses, GM foods, pesticides etc.
