CONFLICT AND CO-OPERATION
Conflict and co-operation can occur on 4 different levels:
NATIONAL
INTERNATIONAL
LOCAL/COMMUNITY
INDIVIDUAL/PERSONAL
What is conflict?
Struggle between two or more opposing FORCES, IDEAS OR INTERESTS
DISAGREEMENT
INEVITABLE when people have DIFFERENT VALUES, ATTITUDES or BELIEFS
Means VIOLENCE for many- BUT only turns to VIOLENCE IF NOT DEALT WITH
CONSTRUCTIVELY (violence is a learned response)
Attempt to achieve MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE goals
EFFECTS EVERYBODY
CAUSES OF CONFLICT
SOCIAL- what is acceptable?
PSYCHOLOGICAL- negative feelings
POLITICAL- POWER etc.
ECONOMIC- disagreements about wealth etc.
RELIGIOUS ­ disagreements about beliefs etc.
MORAL- what is right or wrong?
Happens when PEOPLE FEEL THREATENED
HUMAN RIGHTS ARE IGNORED
EFFECTS OF CONFLICT
PHYSICAL- deaths etc.
PSYCHOLOGICAL- Trauma
POLITICAL- shift in power, distrust from other countries
ECONOMIC- rebuilding etc.
RELIGIOUS- people lose faith
MORAL- decline in values
ENVIROMENTAL-pollution etc.
CAN BE LONG TERM OR SHORT TERM
