Evaluation of Cognitive interviews
Strengths
Research for mental reinstatement of context - particularly in abuse cases
Helps to build a better rapport between the officer and the interviewee
Weaknesses
Police officers have to be trained
o Not always good at it
Time consuming process
May be difficult to merge all the data together
Memory Improvement Strategies
Chunking
o Putting data together into pieces of information which makes sense to the
individual (semantic understanding)
Rehearsal
o Repeating the data over and over again in order to get it into the Long Term
Memory
Categorise
o Putting words of similar meaning together
Narrative Story
o Putting the information into a story to help the reader visualise the data
