Element Function
Subject (S) Usually indicates the element responsible for
carrying out the verb process
Verb (V) The verb process
Object (O) That affected by the action of the verb phrase,
for example: `I kicked the ball'
Complement (C) An attribute that provides more information about
the subject or object, for example: `She is ill' or
`We painted the room blue'
Adverbial (A) The circumstances of the action or event
(where, when, how), for example, `I saw him at
the concert'
