CRIME
CHRISTIANSEN TWIN STUDY and PROPERTY CRIME
AIM to investigate link between MZ and DZ twins and criminality
DESIGN Independent measures design
Natural study
IV whether the twins are MZ or DZ
DV percentage of similarity in twins of crime
PROCEDURE
3586 pairs of twins
Looked at criminal records property theft
RESULTS
If MZ twin is a criminal then 52% of the time, the other twin will be a criminal too
If DZ twin is a criminal then 22% of the time, the other twin will be a criminal too
CONCLUSION
There is a genetic basis to property crime because there is a shared criminal tendency in just
over half of the identical twins studied
Decrease in DZ twins can be explained as they only share half the genes in common
EVALUATION
Strength Weakness
Only looked at property crime so not
generalisable to other crimes
Not generalisable carried out in Denmark
MZ are probably likely to both commit property
crime but they may not commit a murder crime
Small sample size
Study ignores other factors apart form being
twins
Study does not separate nature from nurture as
twins usually share the same up bringing
Sample is only of those who have been
convicted
