Poor Law Amendment Act, 1834.
People who needed help could go to the workhouse.
Workhouses were built all over the country in each parish.
Each parish collected a special tax called the Poor rate to pay for the workhouse.
Conditions in workhouses were very basic so only really poor people would go there.
