1. sensory neurons: these respond to external stimuli such
as touch and light
2. Motor neurons: which carry messages to muscles,
organs or glands
3. Association neurons: these transmit and integrate
information between other neurons

Key Terms
Neurons A specialised cell that communicates with other neurons,
muscles and organs in the body using electrical and chemical
signals or impulses.
Sensory neuron Exists in the sensory organs and responds to messages from
external stimuli. These messages are then directed to the
central nervous system.
