Augustine's theodicy
AUGUSTINE'S THEODICY= evil is a privation of good resulting from angels' and humans' free will and
subsequent fall.
Evil is a `privation' (the absence or lack of something that ought to be there)
Sight............................................ Absence of sight= blindness (blindness does not refer to
anything in
Itself, only to the lack of something)
Good.......................................... Absence of good=evil (evil is not a thing in itself, it is just a
lack of good)
Evil is Angels'/ Mankind's fault
1. angels/ mankind created by God
2. angels/ mankind created with free will
3. free will to choose between:
living God's way
=living right
=good
OR
Not living goods way
=living in sin
=evil
1. Satan rebelled against God and took some of the angels with him
2. Satan tempted Adam and Eve
3. Adam and Eve chose to live their own way instead of God's way (the fall)
4. This brought sin and evil into this world. (But sin and evil are not things in themselves; they
are just an absence of living right and an absence of good)
5. Therefore, God did not create evil or sin. Evil and sin are a privation (an absence of good)
and a result of not living God's way
6. God knew all this was going to happen and that he would have to send Jesus to die for
mankind's sins. God knows who will accept Jesus and be saved and who will not and be
condemned (predestination)
