Astronomy in a nutshell
1. The moon orbits the earth. Other planets also have moons
2. Gravitational field strength, g, means the gravitational force acting
on unit mass ( 1kg) It is different on different planets eg 10N/kg on
earth, 23N/kg in Jupiter and 1.7N/kg on the moon
3. Gravitational force:
causes the planets to orbit the sun
causes the moon and artificial satellites to orbit the earth
causes comets to orbit the sun
causes dropped masses to accelerate towards earth
4. The orbit of a comet is elliptical. When it is close to the sun it moves
at high speed, when more distant it moves more slowly
5. The solar system is part of the milky way galaxy
a galaxy as a large collection of billions of stars
the universe is a large collection of billions of galaxies.
6. The orbital speed of a satellite can be calculated from the orbital
radius and time period: This is another example of speed =
distance /time
