Strengths:
Processes are appealing
Freud recognises the importance of early childhood experiences
Defence mechanisms offer a plausible explanation for every behaviour
Psychoanalysis as a therapeutic approach is widely used
Limitations:
Overemphasis of the sexual instinct ­ some people find this unsettling when applied to
children
Unscientific ­ cannot be refuted as many of the terms are not operationally defined (e.g.
unconscious)
Focuses on the past, stressing the negative effects of past experiences
Therapies are not easily evaluated for effectiveness
