Why might we think that Mrs Birling is a Hypocrite?
Mrs Birling's behaviour can be seen to be hypocritical on several occasions one
being by the way she refers to Daisy/Eva as a `girl' making her seem perhaps
less smarter than she may have actually been, this kind of talk also shows how
she's is using her social status to put the `girl' beneath her. Another could be
when she describes her charity that she runs: `It's an organisation to which
women in distress can appeal to for help in various forms' however, Mrs Birling
refuses Daisy's the help because she came to Mrs Birling using her name; Mrs
Birling. At this point she didn't understand why daisy had come to her like this
but when she refused daisy the help she told her to `go and find the father of
the child' not knowing that Eric was the father. This was daisy's last chance and
Mrs Birling denied her the change at having a better life just because she did
not like her.
Quotes that can be used:
`we've done a great deal of useful work for deserving cases'
`it's an organisation to which women in distress can appeal for help in
various forms'
`She called herself Mrs Birling... I think it was simply a piece of gross
impertinence...that was one of the things that prejudiced me against her
case'
`I'm very sorry... I think she had only herself to blame.'
I didn't like her manner...she had no claim to the name....she wasn't
married.'
I wasn't satisfied with this girl's claim-she seemed to me to not be a
good case-and so I used my influence to have it refused.'
I told her. Go and look for the father of the child. It's his responsibility.'
