What is Abortion?
Abortion is the `the premature expulsion of the foetus from the
womb.'(Nelson and McNiece)
`The word abortion comes from the Latin word aboriri, meaning to
fail to be born.'(Joe Jenkins)
Law on abortion in the Uk (Scotland, England and
Wales)?
Abortion Act 1967 and Human Fertilization act and Embryology act 1990, allows
abortion if:
Risk to life of the mother
Risk of mental or physical injury (up to 24weeks)
Risk to any excising child (up to 24 weeks)
Strong chance that the child may suffer serious physical or mental
abnormalities
Law on abortion in Northern Ireland?
1861 Offences Against the Person Act makes all abortions illegal
1929 Infant Life act and Bourne Judgement 1938 allows abortion
to preserve a mother's life or in circumstances of risk to mental or
physical health.
Law in Ireland?
Illegal, except in special circumstances where the life of the mother
is threatened these circumstances include the risk of suicide.
