Youthful Population (e.g. India)

Advantages

  • Plenty of potential workers for the future
  • Large labor force for natural resources generates income
  • Large tax base so lower taxes

Disadvantages

  • High depedency ratio
  • Strains education and healthcare services, food supplies and accommodation availability
  • Lack of availability of jobs in the future
  • The present working may be unable to pay for the education of the present youthful population, leading to early withdrawal from school
  • Infant mortality rate rises as the government is unable to afford medical treatment facilities
  • Rural-urban migration increases as rural areas are unable to sustain the growing population; this could lead to shanty towns, which means increased poverty and lower standards of living
  • Ecological destruction in order to create more space for agriculture and accommodation
  • Political instability from inability to manage the population

Evaluation

Youthful populations have very high birth rates, slowly decreasing death rates and slow rises in life expectancy. These populations are only sustainable if the country is rich enough and has enough space to look after the growing population until they become economically active. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case as LEDCs tend to have youthful populations as there are higher fertility rates.
