Yalta Conference

Causes

  • February 1945
  • Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt present
  • WWII is clearly won by the Allies, but the end is still a long way off

Effects

  • Agreements:
  • USSR to join the UN
  • Germany to be divided into 4 separate zones
  • Poland to have democratic elections
  • Nazi criminals to be bought to trial
  • Declaration of a liberated Europe
  • USSR to join the pacific war against Japan
  • Disagreement:
  • Stalin wanted some Polish territory- and let Poland take German territory (= more territory to the USSR). FDR and Churchill agree to this as long as Stalin doesn't interfere with the Greek Civil War

Overall summary

Successful conference. Many things are agreed on, although Churchill secretly messages FDR saying "The USSR has become a danger to the world"
