Causes

  • Global Conflict
  • Nationalism - the belief that your country is better than others
  • Alliances (Triple Alliance and Triple Entente)
  • Millitarism (Naval Arms Race)
  • Imperialism - the desire to conquer colonies, especially in Africa
  • Princip shoots Ferdinand because Serbians wanted independence - did not want to represented along with Austria and Hungary

Effects

  • tension / fear / anxiety grew between countries - there was NO TRUST (countries were not sticking to their alliances)
  • This made nations assertive and aggressive
  • Europe was divided into 2 armed camps to help each other if there was a war
  • huge friction between Great Britain and Germany
  • brought powers into conflict, Germany wanted an empire

Overall summary

The First World War began in August 1914. Everyone expected it to be over by Christmas. But it proved to be a very different war from the one expected. On the one side were the Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey. On the other side were the Allies: France Russia, Serbia, Belgium and Britain. Italy joined the allies in 1915.
