USSR
  • Wanted to expand the sphere of influence over the countries so they would be loyal
  • Capitalist, didn't like communism- threat to democracy
  • USA kept the atom bomb a secret and used it in Japan
  • Arms race to have the most powerful weapon
  • New President Truman was anti-Communist and didn't like Stalin
  • Both countries afraid of the huge power of atomic bombs
  • Western Europe supported the USA 'Iron Curtain'
  • Stalin wanted to dominate the countries and turn them Communists
  • Communist- one party state/ censorship- feared American influence
  • USSR threatened by the USA, suspicious of USA after the bomb- distrust grew
  • Experienced Stalin thought the new British and American leaders were weak so he could do whatever he wanted
  • USSR didn't hold free elections in E.Europe as promised at Yalta
  • Eastern Europe dominated by USSR

Actions taken
  • The Marshall Plan- American aid to European countries to help rebuild economies. Worried if Western Europe remained weak they would fall the communism
  • The Truman Doctrine- Support nations threatened by a communist takeover eg. 400 million dollars given to aid Turkey and Greece
  • Took over Eastern Europe- made them communist
  • Free speech suppressed
  • Non-communist parties banned/ communist parties controlled by Cominform (Russian-style communists)
  • Comecon (1949)-worked to nationalised states' industries and collective agriculture
  • Red Army occupied E.Europe
  • Weakened the countries instead of helping them and finally pointed that their solution was to become communist

This is really good but quite biased towards USA. USSR only wanted to 'dominate' Eastern Europe because it had been invaded twice in the past years and didn't want to get invaded again. Also if you are mentioning the comecon then you should mention NATO.
