Overall comparisonLord Byron's "When We Two Parted" and Thomas Hardy's "Neutral Tones", the poets try to demonstrate their heartbreak through a range of structural and language techniques. They are both trying to elaborate on the pain that a broken relationship can cause for a man. They are both male poets. An archetypal man during the 19th century would be expected to be bold, dominant and ultimately emotionless as having emotions was a feminine quality. The fact that both poets talk about the pain and loss they felt directs the reader into feeling sympathy and empathy. As men they are demonstrating that they too have feelings, that an end to what they thought was a loving relationship can have consequences in which they find unable to endure. |
