WHAT EXPLAINS THE FALL AND COLLAPSE OF THE USSR C1985-1991?

Causes

  • GLASNOST

Effects

  • Complaints about poor housing were popular
  • Investigations of Soviet history revealed details of Stalin's mass terror, the famine of the 1930s and the Katyn massacre
  • The myth of the Soviet victory in WW2 was undermined by revelations of the reckless waste of human life
  • Environmental issues were revealed such as the damaging impact on the Aral sea pf government irrigation schemes

Overall summary

By 1989, Soviet people had much more of a voice than they did before - over 60,000 informal groups and clubs that held meetings, organised demonstrations and calling for political reform. Instead of producing support for Gorbachev, glasnost resulted in a wave of criticism against the party. Once glasnost started, it could not be stopped as people continued to have freedom of speech and opinion.
