Watergate Scandal

Causes

  • 1968, Nixon was elected
  • 1972, re-election so he set up CREEP which was encouraged to use whatever method necessary to ensure he was re-elected
  • June 17 1972, five members of CREEP were arrested for breaking into Watergate Office of the Democrat Party in an attempt to bug it
  • Two reporters found out CREEP was funded and controlled by White House
  • 1972, Nixon denied all knowledge by admitting two of his top advisers were involved, they resigned 30 April1973, and he was re-elected
  • John Dean claimed scandal had been covered up by Nixon
  • 21 November 1973, Nixon handed over 7 of the 9 tapes but they were edited
  • 30 April 1974, handed over all 9 unedited tapes which showed him swearing and how he had been involved in the scandal
  • 8 August, Nixon resigned

Effects

  • Nixon was fist president in America to resign following impeachment
  • Gerald Ford became president a day later but was criticised as he kept most of Nixon's workers and he gave Nixon a pardon for his part in the Scandal
  • People lost confidence in government
  • 1976, Jimmy Carter became president and tried to regain people confidents in government, gave women and black Americans job. Oil crisis led to him being criticised as petrel prices rose
  • Nixon's resign led to an investigation into power of the president and it was found that presidents had been using powers given to them in 1950 as emergency power
  • 1976, powers were balanced by a number or acts and laws
