Was the Weimar Republic Doomed From the Start?

Advantages

  • After recovering from the economic prosperity of the Golden Ages peole voted for mainstream democratic parties. As a result, extrimists like the Nazis lost support
  • The numerous revoltuions failed and in 1932, President Hindenburg beat Hitler in the presidential election
  • In 1932 the economic situation was at it's lowest and the Nazi party was reached the highest point. BUT had the Weimar regime lasted a bit longer, the bankrupt Nazi party would've lost support

Disadvantages

  • The Treaty of Versailles was hated by the Germans and it appeared to some that the Weimar Republic had allowed the Treaty to take it's toll especially as Ebert  had agreed to sign it. So, from the start, many felt hatred towards the Democracy
  • Coalitions within the Government couldn't agree on a set of policies. Even when people thought action needed to be taken, the parties couldn't settle on an agreement
  • The multiple revolutions displayed how unpopular the Republic was and it became apparent that either the Left or the Right side would take over soon

Evaluation

I think that the Weimar Republic was doomed from the beginning based on one sole concept; for most Germans, the Republic stood for accepting the Treaty of Versailles when led to a chain of unfavourable events including the depression, followed by hyperinflation. Nonetheless, the revolutions of the angry Germans were unsuccessful showing the power and influence the Weimar Republic had at one point.
