Waiting for Godot: Vladimir

?

Appearance

Role

  • More rational and aware than Estragon- 'Pozzo and Lucky, have you forgotten them too?'
  • More intellectual/ verbose, has philosophical ideas about life, religion etc.
  • Prostate problem '(stiff strides, legs wide apart)' symbolic of masculine stocisim
  • Serves to remind Estragon of their purpose for waiting- 'In the immense confusion one thing alone is clear. We are waiting for Godot to come'
  • Attempts to suggest theories of what's going on and encourage debate on philosophy- 'Only one speaks of a thief being saved. Why believe him rather than the others?'

Development (Growth & change)

Identity

  • First outraged by Pozzo's treatment of Lucky- 'it's a scandal!' but does nothing to stop it
  • Later goes on to mirror Pozzo's abusive language on Estragon- 'the other, hog!'
  • Seems assured at beginning, but less by the end- 'You're sure you saw me, you won't come back and tell me tomorrow you never saw me!'
  • Becomes more aggressive- '(with sudden violence) you're sure you saw me!
  • Only character with sense of linear time- realises Act 2 repeats Act 1 'off we go again'
  • Relies on Estragon for company/ someone to profess his ideas to- 'Gogo!...Gogo!...Gogo!...I felt lonely'
  • Capable of forming new thoughts/ ideas in their games- 'they whisper...they murmur'
