Waiting for Godot: Lucky

?

Appearance

Role

  • Pozzo's slave- subject to constant insults
  • Figure of physical suffering- whipped and beaten
  • Vladimir and Estragon originally feel sorry for him but then turn to abusing him- 'It's a scandal' -> 'How dare you!...Such a good master!'
  • Mostly silent but gives a length nonsensical speech in Act 1- makes fun of upper-class academicism
  • ‘Crowned by the Acacacacademy of Anthropopopometry of Essy-in-Possy of Testew and Cunard’
  • Could represent mankind being a slave to the will of God

Development (Growth & change)

Identity

  • Fights back against Estragon- '(Lucky kicks him violently in the shins)'
  • Sense that Pozzo and Lucky once had a more equal relationship, maybe even as friends- 'He used to be so kind...so helpful...and entertaining...my good angel'
  • Dumb in Act 2- 'can't even groan' -irony since his defining moment was his speech
  • Name might be ironic
  • But also lucky as he has an assure purpose in life whereas the other characters don't
  • Dehumanised and treated like an animal- contextual influence of human rights post WW2
  • Could emancipate himself but choses not too- codependency- 'He wants to impress me, so that I'll keep him'
