Use of Hydrogen-Oxygen Fuel Cells

Advantages

  • More Efficient than conventional batteries
  • No direct contribution to the greenhouse effect by carbon dioxide production
  • No incomplete combustion to produce CO

Disadvantages

  • Fuel cells have a limited lifetime and need replacing
  • Fuel cells are expensive to produce because of materials to make the electrodes and membrane
  • Manufacturing can produce toxic by-products
  • Carbon dioxide may be produced in obtaining the hydrogen
  • May be difficult to store

Evaluation

- Fuel cells using Methanol instead of Hydrogen are preferable as a liquid so easier to store and the Emf difference between that and the oxygen is greater hence more efficient - Can store hydrogen as a highly pressurised liquid, adsorbed onto a surface or absorbed by certain metal alloys
