US Mitigation Opportunities and Challenges.

Advantages

  • Aims to attract those of "extraordinary ability" e.g. in maths, science, arts and business; professors and researchers. Main employment of USA immigrant ( China (51%) and India (73%)) were mostly science and business.
  • Immigrants take up many of low-skilled jobs which native-born americans find unattractive e.g.mexican employment were in services (31%), natural resources/construction/manufactoring (25%) and transport/production (22%).
  • Most US immigrants are in youthful working age and this is a socio-economic benefit with a declining population due to ageing and reduced birth rates.

Disadvantages

  • Uneven concentration and locations of immigrants can cause issues for supplies and resources e.g. providing an adequate water supply in California.
  • There have been 11.5 million unauthorised immigrants, 6 million being Mexican with many other Latin-Americans wishing to migrate across Mexico into the States as a transit country the US Homeland Security has tightened its Southern maritime, West Coast Borders and Southern land.
  • Uneven progress on immigrant integration in the US has depended on size and diversity of the various immigrant groups as well as factors such as language barriers, socio-economic attainment, political participation, residential locations and social interactions.

Evaluation

US mitigation means many of the undesired low-skilled jobs such as services(31%), construction/resources/manufacturing(25%) and products/transport(22%) are taken by them which boosts economic growth and GDP. However, the tertiary and quaternary sectors of the US economy also benefit from this with those with "extraordinary ability" in maths, sciences, arts and business with main employment of immigrants being science and business (51% China and 73% India). The majority of the immigrants being of the young working age will not only secure these occupations but will also help deal with an ageing population and declining crude birth rate.Having said this, there are challenges that come with mitigation; uneven concentration and locations of immigrant raises issues of resources and supplies e.g. providing an adequate water supply in California due to a dense immigrant section in the population. Uneven progress on immigrant integration in the US is also uncertain due to varying sizes and diversity of the various groups as well as the following factors; language barriers, social interaction, socio-economic attainment, political participation and residential locations. Dealing with legal immigrants isn't easier with the unauthorised 11.5m (6m being Mexican) who hail from neighbouring countries and use Mexico as a transit country to get into North America; luckily the USA Department of Homeland Security has tightened its regulations such as the Southern Maritime, West Coast Borders and Southern land.
