UK's Declining Primary Sector

?

UK's Declining Primary Sector

Causes

  • Depletion of resources
  • Importing raw materials
  • Mechanisation and modernisation
  • Social change
  • Policies

Effects

  • Some raw materials have been used up or now cost too much to extract e.g. South Wales coal
  • It is often cheaper and easier to import products from other countries e.g. Coal from Russia
  • Technology in all primary industries has developed so that fewer workers are needed but production and yields have increased e.g. Tractors and fertilisers in farming
  • Many primary sector jobs are hard work - dirty and tiring - and many people do not want to do this kind of work, preferring jobs in shops and offices where the pay is better
  • Quotas introduced by the EU on industries like fishing have reduced the number of fish that can be caught

Overall summary

With increased mechanisation, technology can complete the same job as a worker but for a cheaper amount and fewer health risks. Modernisation prevents the access to the primary sector as machines can extract resources much quicker. This would decrease the national income as fewer people are working and contributing to the economy. The environment will suffer as more harmful substances and gases are given of. In developing areas there will be a higher death rate as less money funds the healthcare system
