UK contitution

Advantages

  • NO way to write it without it being partisan and taking too long.
  • No public demand, unlike with other constitutional change e.g Brexit and Scottish independence.
  • Flexible so can be changed to meet electorate' demands, e.g Brexit meeting the wishes of 52% of the electroate.and FOI
  • Embodies the history of the country; 1215 Clause 40 of the Magna Carta, the country won't 'delay the right to justice', establishing the rule of law.1701 Act of Settlement protected the salaries of judges. 1911&1949 Parliament Act, HOL only veto for a year.

Disadvantages

  • Can lead to executive dominance; in 1997 Tony Blair had a majority of 418.
  • Give the executive and a single parliament  a lot of power to seriously alter the constitution. e.g Tony Blair and HRA and FOI.The European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 leading to an eventual exit in October 2019, completely impacting sovereignty.
  • Can lead to populist ideas being passed, e.g Brexit.
  • No real definition of constitution, 2006 Reform Bill proposed a defintion, but the government said this was 'clear'
