Transition metals

Causes

  • Cr and Cu = donate one of their 4S electrons to the 3D sub shell
  • why? because this makes their D sub shell more stable
  • how are they more stable? having a FULL or HALF FULL d sub shell

Effects

  • Cr atom: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5 4s1 (Stability due to now HALF FULL d subshell
  • Cu atom: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s1 (Stability due to now FULL d subshell

Overall summary

another odd thing about TRANSITION METALS - when they become ions, they lose their 4s electrons before their 3d electrons (due to 4s being higher in energy than 3d sub shell FE atom: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2  FE atom: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5
