To what extent did workers benefit under Nazi rule between 1933 and 1939?

Advantages

  • They were promised "Bread and Work".
  • Employment provided in public work schemes e.g. RAD.
  • Incentives provided by KDF and DAF.
  • SDA aimed to improve working conditions.

Disadvantages

  • In 1938, wages were lower than in 1928.
  • Trade unions were banned so workers had no representation.
  • SDA used as an excuse to keep wages low.
  • Many resented forced work.

Evaluation

Between 1933 and 1939, the lives of German workers did improve on the whole. Hitler fulfilled his promise and provided "Bread and Work". However, this improvement was at the cost of their freedom.
