to investigate the capacity of units that fit into peoples short term memory

Advantages

  • finding have been usefully applied to improving memory. this means the research although it was in a lab impacted, the real world, for example techniques of chunking, show how we can recall telephone numbers, and how we break up information in order to remember more.

Disadvantages

  • it was a lab experiment and so therefore it was low ecological validity, this means that it was set in an artificial environment that is not representative of real life settings, for example memories are not normally formed around lists of numbers, they involve lots of other things such as lists of numbers.

Evaluation

-the short term memory has a limited storage capacity of between 5 and 9 items, this can be improved with techniques (ie. chunking).-participants recalled between 5 and 9 digits. memory span increases with age and the type of information does not determine span which is fairly consistent in individuals.
