The new economic policy

Causes

  • The Kronstadt mutiny was one of the main causes of the new economic policy.
  • It started when workers and sailors mutinied in the naval base over better conditions
  • Trotsky ordered 60,00 men to attack and 10,000 were killed or sent to a labour camp.
  • Workers and sailors used to be his main support so Lenin realized things needed to change.
  • -
  • The imapacts of war communism had also put both the cities and the countryside into chaos with 5 million dying of starvation because of the agriculture collapsing and the currency collapsing also.

Effects

  • Lenin stopped the requisitioning squad who forced the peasants to give up their grain.
  • Peasants had to supply a percentage of what they grew however they could now sell their surplus to the market to make a profit.
  • All small factories were privatised and bigger factories were nationalised

Overall summary

I believe that the NEP was a success because it reduced the numbers dying of starvation and it also reduced inflation. Peasants were better off because they could make a profit by selling their surplus. Factories also produced more goods so their was more food and goods for everyone.
