The Multi Store Model (MSM)

The Multi Store Model (MSM)

Advantages

  • Applications to IRL situations - hippocampal damage
  • Gives strong evidence for the claims for Duration/Capacity/Encoding and for the existence of 3 different stores
  • The model does provide accounts for both structures and processes
  • Has stimulated a lot of research into memory, the model provides clear predictions about memory making it easily testable through studies

Disadvantages

  • Oversimplified model
  • STM isn't a unitary store (e.g. KF case study)
  • LTM isn't a unitary store (Semantic, episodic, procedural memories)
  • Processing is more important than maintenance rehearsal (e.g Shallow + Semantic processing)
  • STM isn't independant of LTM (Ruchkin et al)

Evaluation

Usually studies are lab experiments, which adds demand characteristic and investigator bias to the findings, consequently lowering the external validity and the extent to which they can support the model, but extraneous variables such as age are well controlled. Psychology students are often used, but as students are more likely to be more intelligent they consequently may have more strategies for remembering and recalling information. As well as this these types of students may try to figure out what the experiments goals are, possibly affecting their behaviour and therefore the findings of the study, reducing the validity of the findings. Also, most of the studies are done relating to semantic memory making them relevant to some everyday memory situations, but not all of them.
