The Multi Store Model: An Evaluation

The Multi Store Model: An Evaluation

Advantages

  • There is evidence from studies of patients with aterograde amnesia that suggest that if the process of transferring information from STM to LTM is damaged, then new information cannot be stored in LTM.
  • The Model Explains why we have to repeat certain information e.g. a telephone number so we can remember it.

Disadvantages

  • The model does not explain the different types of memory and the definition it gives about LTM is vague
  • The model ignores how emotional and situational factors can aid in remembering information.
  • A more modern cognitive theory devised by Atkinson and Shiffrin casts doubt over the static presentation of STM in this theory. In the Working Memory Model STM is shown as a dynamic system which has multiple components.

Evaluation

The Multi Store Model gives a logical approach on how information is coded into our memory and is supported by research into brain damaged patients. However, it is overly simplistic due to the vague definitions of complex stores. In addition this theory has been made obsolete by the more modern theory of the Working Memory Model devised by Atkinson and Shiffrin. This theory disproves STM as being a static store as presented in this theory.
